Tragic Incident on Zaria-Kano Expressway: A Call for Road Safety Awareness

On a fateful morning along the bustling Zaria-Kano expressway, tragedy struck as an overspeeding trailer careened out of control, resulting in a devastating crash. The aftermath left a harrowing toll: 12 lives lost and 28 individuals gravely injured. Kabir Nadabo, the Kaduna State sector commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), confirmed the grim occurrence, pinpointing its location at Tashar Yari village and the time of impact at 7:36 a.m. on a somber Monday morning.

The trailer, bearing the registration number KTG 454 ZZ, had been en route to Kano when the calamitous incident unfolded. Nadabo attributed the cause of the crash to a lethal combination of wrongful overtaking, excessive speeding, and overloading. These reckless actions culminated tragically, leaving behind a staggering number of casualties. As the dust settled, the gravity of the situation became apparent, prompting swift response efforts from local authorities.

Among those at the scene were the Chairman of Makarfi Local Government and the Unit Commander of Tashar Yari, both tasked with assessing the aftermath of the tragedy. Initial investigations painted a grim picture: 40 individuals were caught in the chaos, with 28 suffering injuries and 12 succumbing to the merciless fate that befell them. The injured were swiftly transported to the Makarfi General Hospital for urgent medical attention, while the deceased were mourned by loved ones left behind.

As authorities grappled with the aftermath, attention turned to the responsible parties. The owner of the ill-fated vehicle, situated in Azare, Bauchi State, was promptly notified and directed to report to the Kaduna Sector Command. Tragically, the driver of the trailer was counted among the casualties, underscoring the severity of the incident and the irrevocable loss experienced.

In the wake of such preventable tragedy, Nadabo emphasized the avoidable nature of the accident, stressing the imperative of proactive measures to mitigate future risks. Central to this effort is the ongoing collaboration with stakeholders, particularly transport unions, to raise awareness about the perils of speeding, overloading, reckless driving practices, and the hazardous distraction posed by cellphone use while driving. The FRSC in Kaduna remains steadfast in its commitment to fostering a culture of safety on the roads, recognizing the pivotal role of education and advocacy in safeguarding lives.

Amidst the somber reflections, Nadabo issued a heartfelt appeal to motorists, urging them to embrace the ethos of safe driving, especially on the highways where the stakes are highest. The tragic events along the Zaria-Kano expressway serve as a sobering reminder of the fragility of life and the profound impact of road safety awareness in averting senseless loss.

As the community mourns its fallen members and tends to the wounded, the call for vigilance and responsibility echoes louder than ever. Through collective action and unwavering commitment to road safety, may we honor the memory of those lost and spare others from enduring similar tragedies on our nation’s highways.
